the value of nature in design
With summer upon us, I am reminded once again how the Earth brings forth exquisite beauty: gigantic rose blossoms in a array of colors, juicy bright lemons dripping from the lush green trees, the birds singing their happy tunes. I have yet to find a rose with an offensive color, an "out of date" fruit tree, or a bird with that sings out of tune.
On the pages of every design magazine you will see fresh flowers, shells, or bowls of fruit. Sometimes on a tablescape, all that is needed to break up a plain geometrical arrangement is a textural piece of coral or a sculptural orchid.
When nature is brought inside the home is when a room truly comes to life. Some of the ost amazing art and design is simply inspired by nature, whether it is a color, texture, pattern, or lines that comes straight from Mother Nature. I love seeing art forms from nature make a rebirth, for example faux bois, or concrete in the shape of twigs.
Over 15 years ago in France, I took a picture of a beautiful faux bois fence. Take a look at this charming faux bois lamp from Oly. My challenge to you this season is to add more nature to your decor. Snip some greens from your garden and make a quick arrangement, put a big shell next to your bathtub, display your fruit in a natural wooden bowl. Go ahead and embrace the Earth.
